On one hand, the COVID-19 vaccination drive is progressing at a rapid pace in India, while on the other hand, the numbers of fresh COVID-19 infection cases are spiking up. As a result, many citizens as well as the state governments are demanding the Centre open up vaccination for all citizens above 18 years of age. Currently, vaccination is open for all people above 45 years of age.
But, on Tuesday, 6th April, the Union Health Ministry, clarified that the main purpose of vaccination during any pandemic is to reduce the death rate/mortalities, and not to inoculate each and every person who needs it.
As we know that, older people are more vulnerable to such viruses, and their body/immune system may not be able to fight the virus. Eventually, there is a higher potential risk of death in older citizens. So, protecting them is more important.
Secondly, protecting the health care workers, security forces, and other people who are connected with the health care system (medical equipment manufacturing, vaccine manufacturers) is important. Without them, we won’t be able to fight this pandemic. Imagine if the health care system collapses then, there will be no one available to take care/treat the common citizens.
Other countries like United Kingdom, USA, France, Sweden, and Australia are also following the same procedure and giving vaccination only to vulnerable individuals, including the older ones.
It is important to realize that currently, we are fighting with one of the worst pandemics in human history. So, citizens, as well as the states, need to show some more patience. Working at a slow pace, yet with an organized approach is much sensible, rather than hurrying and spoiling the equilibrium.
So, don’t worry, each and every one of us will get a chance for receiving COVID-19 vaccine shots, and soon we will be out from this pandemic. Just keep some patience, and do follow the general COVID-19 protocols.
