Even though the COVID-19 vaccination drive in India is progressing rapidly, yet vaccinating each and every individual is a big challenge, and might take a longer time than expected.
To date, 94.3 Million vaccine doses are administered in India, and 11.9 Million people are fully vaccinated. This also means that only 0.9% of India’s population is fully vaccinated.
Where does India stand?
Currently, India has surpassed the US and has become the fastest vaccinating country in the world against COVID-19. An average of 34 lakh vaccine doses were administered each day during the past week. It is projected that this number will be increased in the coming week, and the process of vaccination will be made faster.
However, the Health Ministry told that the main aim of vaccination is to reduce the death/mortality rate. As older people are more vulnerable and likely to get infected & die, so vaccinating them is the first priority. Along with this, protecting the healthcare workers is also crucial. So, other citizens need to wait patiently for the chance.
How long it may take?
As per the study made by the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), if vaccination is made open for all adults (i.e., above 18 years of age), even then it will take around more six to seven months (at the current rate) to fully inoculate the whole country.
This number can be lowered by increasing the average vaccination rate. Another thing is that the teens/kids below 18 years of age are excluded from this, as there is no vaccine available for young kids.
What lies ahead?
The Central Government is working with the vaccine manufacturers and planning to ramp up the vaccine production by 14 crore vials each month till August.
Lastly, from the available data, we can say that it will take more than 6 to 7 months to inoculate the whole adult population of our country. Several states have also reported a shortage of vaccines. India was also exporting the vaccine doses to poor/needy nations, which altogether has put immense pressure on the vaccine manufacturers to meet the demand.
