The number of COVID-19 cases has started increasing once again, with the onset of the second wave. All of us know that wearing a mask is one of the primary measures of protecting ourselves from the virus. Healthcare experts advise that one should not let go of his/her mask ever after receiving the vaccination.
Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) shared a few guidelines on wearing fabric and medical masks – who should use them, how, & when?
Medical/Surgical Masks
The medical/surgical masks should be worn by:
– Those who look after someone confirmed or suspected of having a COVID-19 infection.
– Healthcare workers.
– People having COVID-19 symptoms.
Medical masks can also be worn by people above 60 years of age or above, and people having prevailing health issues while going to places where there is more concentration of cases and where maintaining physical distancing is difficult.
Fabric Masks
Previously, i.e., before the COVID-19 pandemic, fabric masks were not in much use. Medical masks were the only available masks. But, at the beginning of the pandemic, there was a huge shortage of medical masks.
So, people started making their own 3-layered fabric masks. Fabric masks can be easily made at home using a cotton cloth. Soon, most of the people were seen using fabric masks instead of medical masks.
According to WHO, fabric masks can be worn by people who don’t have any COVID-19 symptoms. It includes the people who are in close contact, with the servers, cashiers, and social workers.
Fabric masks can also be worn in busy places like public transport, malls, grocery stores, and workplaces.
In the meanwhile, India has reported more than 19,29,329 active COVID-19 cases.
Still, many people were spotted roaming openly without wearing any masks. So let it be a medical or fabric mask, make it a point to wear a mask while stepping out from the home.
